If You See Something, Say Something

If you’ve been in an airport recently, you’re probably familiar with the slogan, "If You See Something, Say Something.” It was originally implemented and trademarked by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY MTA) after a terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001. In July 2010, the NY MTA granted the Department of Homeland Security a license to use the trademarked slogan to implement a nationwide anti-terrorism campaign.* Generally speaking, the phrase is good guidance for all of us.

At Ascension, most members actively care for the property and contribute to fostering safe spaces for worship, outreach, and more. This past Sunday, you heard some updates about the Safety and Security Team and the plans to remain proactive through training and drills during the year. As we enter the campus each week, it is imperative to stay aware as it contributes not only to our safety but also to how we welcome those joining us for the first time.

Understandably, some issues go unmentioned as nobody wants to seem like a complainer. For example, if you’re asked for money or help from someone while you are at Ascension, you might not mention it to anyone, even if you feel uncomfortable or feel that a line was crossed. However, if you share the need with the clergy or other leaders, we can do our best to meet it collectively rather than a single member bearing the weight of it. When in doubt, share what you notice and your experience; this will help our community create a safe space and be welcoming to all.

Blessings,
